Petraeus rechnet mit Verschärfung der Kämpfe in Afghanistan

Der designierte NATO-Oberbefehlshaber in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, erwartet in den kommenden Monaten eine Verschärfung der Gefechte am Hindukusch. Bei einer Anhörung im US-Senat in Washington machte Petraeus zudem wenig Hoffnung auf ein baldiges Ende des Einsatzes. Unterdessen starb erstmals seit Beginn des Konflikts in Afghanistan in einem Monat eine dreistellige Zahl ausländischer Soldaten.

"Wir beobachten inmitten der komplizierten Kämpfe in Afghanistan zwar Fortschritte in einigen Gebieten", sagte Petraeus vor dem Verteidigungsausschuss des US-Senats. Die "rauen Gefechte" würden jedoch weitergehen und könnten sich in den kommenden Monaten im Zuge des verschärften Vorgehens der NATO-Truppe ISAF gegen die Taliban noch intensivieren.

Erfolge sieht Petraeus vor allem in der südlichen Unruheprovinz Helmand. Allerdings werde es noch Jahre dauern, bis die afghanischen Kräfte in der Lage seien, selber für Sicherheit zu sorgen. "Das Engagement in Afghanistan wird also andauern", sagte der General. Zugleich unterstützte er aber den von US-Präsident Barack Obama angestrebten Beginn des Truppenabzugs im Juli 2011.

Petraeus soll General McChrystal ersetzen, der seinen Posten wegen abfälliger Äußerungen zur US-Regierung räumen musste. Es gilt als sicher, dass der Senat Petraeus bestätigen wird, was noch im Laufe der Woche geschehen könnte. Obama hatte den bisherigen Chef des US-Zentralkommandos vor knapp einer Woche zum Kommandeur der US- und NATO-Truppen in Afghanistan ernannt.

Laut der Zählung der Nachrichtenagentur AFP, die sich auf die unabhängige Website icasualties.org stützt, ist der Juni 2010 mit bislang 100 getöteten ausländischen Soldaten der blutigste Monat seit der Invasion Ende 2001. Nach Angaben eines NATO-Sprechers wurden im Juni 81 Soldaten der internationalen Truppen bei Kampfeinsätzen getötet. Zwölf Soldaten seien auf andere Weise ums Leben gekommen. Weitere sieben, die in der ISAF-Zählung nicht enthalten sind, erlagen ihren Verletzungen, nachdem sie zur Behandlung außer Landes gebracht wurden. Der bis dahin tödlichste Monat für die US-geführten NATO-Truppen war der August 2009 mit 77 getöteten Soldaten.

In Ostafghanistan wurden bei einem Überraschungsangriff unterdessen einem Bericht der "Washington Post" zufolge 150 Taliban getötet. Die Zeitung berichtete, rund 700 US- und afghanische Soldaten hätten am Sonntag im Morgengrauen in der Grenzprovinz Kunar mit Blackhawk-Hubschraubern angegriffen. Der US-geführte Einsatz sei einer der größten in der Region um die Provinz Kunar und "einer der heftigsten Kämpfe des vergangenen Jahres" in Afghanistan gewesen, zitierte die Zeitung US-Vertreter.
